Seemantham

July 27, 2010

Seemantham also known as Valaikaap…..Godh Bharai……even known as a Baby shower……This is one such important function conducted for pregnant women in their 5th…7th or 9th month to pray for a healthy child and the gonna be mommy’s parents bring her home for her delivery……She is all set just like a beautiful bride…..Its my sister’s Seemanthan ….she’s 7th months pregnant…..we all are super excited….It is done for first time mothers. The ceremony is more religious in nature, and is intended to fulfill the mother’s dreams and expectations of the child. There are different ceremony’s which take place in different parts of south India….its different in Kerala….different in Tamil Nadu….Now our ancestral origin being Tamil we follow the Tamil tradition not completely partly with the Malayali Tradition as well……we took 7 different type of sweets for the gonna-be-mommy ….we also had the Valaikaap along with the Seemantham where the girls Mother makes her wear golden bangles which should be of around 8gms in weight per bangle…..and every one else makes her wear glass bangles which should be odd in number as in 1 ….3…5….7..etc …..it is said that the baby in the womb should grow listening to the voice the bangles…..and the mother should wear these bangles(atleast the one’s which her mom gives her) till the time she delivers the child…..these bangles protect the child……I really all this kind of customs and tradition….they are rarely done nowadays but they have such wonderful meaning hidden in them……My sis is home and we all had a blast at her Seemanthan & Valaikaap 🙂
